Connecting Midbench to your assistant

What Midbench is

Midbench keeps a company's accounting records: it connects to the financial services the company authorizes (banks, payment processors, billing platforms), reads their activity, and turns it into a ledger an accountant closes month by month. This page is for the company's owner. It shows how to read those books, and talk to the accountant about them, from the AI assistant you already use. Midbench moves no money and executes no transactions of any kind. It reads activity and posts accounting entries.

How you get access

Your accountant sends you an invitation link. It works once and expires after about three days. Open it in your own browser. On the sign-in page you create your Midbench account, or sign in if you already have one: a passkey on your phone or computer, or a code sent to your email. There is no password to invent, and Midbench's own servers never see one. The account you sign in with is bound to your company's books and to nothing else.

Connecting a bank or another provider also happens on Midbench's own pages, never in the chat. When you ask your assistant to connect one, it gives you a one-time link; you authorize in your browser, and the credential goes to Midbench's vault.

Adding Midbench in Claude

In claude.ai open Settings, then Customize, then Connectors, and choose Add custom connector.
Enter the address https://mcp.midbench.com/mcp and confirm.
When Claude sends you to Midbench's sign-in page, sign in with the account from your invitation.

The connector then appears among your chat's tools, in claude.ai and in Claude Desktop alike. From a terminal, Claude Code reaches the same door with claude mcp add --transport http midbench https://mcp.midbench.com/mcp, then /mcp to sign in.

Adding Midbench in ChatGPT

ChatGPT connects to Midbench through its developer mode, available on its paid plans on the web. Turn it on once under Settings, then Security and login, Developer mode. Then:

Open chatgpt.com/plugins and choose the plus button at the top right, beside the search field.
In the New Plugin dialog give the connector a name (for example Midbench books), enter https://mcp.midbench.com/mcp as the server URL, keep OAuth as the authentication, accept the notice about custom servers, and create it.
Sign in with the account from your invitation when ChatGPT sends you to Midbench's sign-in page.
On the connector's page (Settings, then Plugins, then your connector) choose Refresh, so ChatGPT loads the tools. The Actions list fills at once.
In a new chat choose Developer mode from the plus menu and select the connector.

Under the connector's Permissions the default asks you to approve each change before it is sent. Allow all actions if you prefer not to be asked; either way, a request worded plainly (what to change and why) is what the assistant sends.

What you can do

Read. The balance sheet, the income statement and the cash flow for any month your accountant has closed; the schedules behind them (depreciation, prepaid expenses, loan interest, deferred revenue); the ledger itself by account, month or any tag; what needs your attention; and the journal of your exchanges with your accountant.
Answer. The questions your accountant asks you land on your attention list. Answer them in the chat, in plain words; the answer is recorded under your name.
Propose. A posting, a reclassification, a policy, an account, or a note about the company. Your assistant asks you before it sends a change. What happens next depends on the access your accountant has set: while they run the books, a change is refused and becomes a request to them; when they have opened suggestions to you, a routine change applies at once under your name and stays reversible, and anything larger waits for your confirmation on your attention list.

Nothing you do in the chat moves money, sends a document anywhere, or deletes a record. Every change is a reviewable entry on your own books, attributed to whoever made it.

What Midbench stores

Your company's ledger records, the activity read from the providers you authorized, and the credentials for those connections, held in a vault and never shown. Ledger records are retained for as long as the company keeps its account, and audit history as required for financial record-keeping. The details are in the privacy policy.
